NEOGEO: If you don't like sports games, fighting games and shmups then there's no point buying one of these. Essentially a home version of their arcade machine, SNK's 16-bit console is still hugely powerful today. Sporting a reasonably sized library of extremely good games, the NeoGeo can still outclass the Playstation for sheer arcade fun.

There's some real top class shmups here, including the wonderful Pulstar and it's followup Blazing Star, two Metal Slug games, Last Resort, Alpha-Mission II and the irritatingly fabulous Viewpoint.

Aero Fighters 2, aka Sonic Wings 2 Video System Conventional vert scroller. Plain, simple, but fun.
Aero Fighters 3, aka Sonic Wings 3 Video System Sequel to the above, and more of the same.
Alpha Mission 2 aka ASO II : Last Guardian

Andro Dunos Visco 1992
Blazing Star Yumekobo Arcade only. Not as good as Pulstar, though not a true sequel.
Captain Tomaday Visco
Ghost Pilots SNK Average war shmup. Drab and basic.
Iron Clad / Chotetsu Bri'kinger (Neo-Geo CD only!)
Last Resort SNK R-Typeish shmup featuring a long ship and a weapon orb.
Prehistoric Isle 2    
Pulstar Aicom Rumored ex-Irem members worked on this. Fantastic playability, and the best rendered graphics going!
Strikers 1945+ Psikyo NeoGeo-only game from the Strikers series. Really good fun and quality gameplay
Twinkle Star Sprites SNK Wicked puzzle style shooter. Attack your opponent by wasting chains of baddies!
Viewpoint Sammy Isometric shmup, also on the MegaDrive (although the game itself is a pain)
Zed Blade / Operation Ragnarok NMK 1994
